Common Estate Planning Misconceptions
What Really Forms Part of Your Estate (and What Doesn’t)
This presentation explains some of the most common misconceptions people have about wills and estate planning in the Northern Territory, with a particular focus on what assets are actually controlled by a will and what assets may pass outside the estate. It clarifies the difference between estate assets, such as property or bank accounts held in a sole name, and non-estate assets, such as jointly owned property, superannuation death benefits, and certain insurance proceeds, which may transfer automatically regardless of the will. The talk aims to help participants better understand how their assets will be dealt with after death, highlight the importance of clear and up-to-date planning, and provide practical steps to ensure their wishes are properly carried out and family members are not left facing unnecessary confusion or dispute.
